About

Meet Dylan

Owner and operator of Bird Built LLC.

Hey there! When I’m not working on a project, I’m working on something! I have a hard time sitting still. I love spending time outdoors, whether that’s hiking, mountain biking, fishing with my dad. I am constantly learning and would love to learn from you. I listen to books and podcasts while I work. I’m currently doing school online through Snow College too. My personality has really wrapped around welding. I’ve loved the pursuit of mastery and all the places it’s taken me. It’s hard work for sure, but I haven’t lost the love for it yet!

My story

Bird Built

When I attended trade school, I knew very quickly that operating my own business was a dream of mine and started making steps towards it. A little at a time, I’ve bought tools and taken on projects. My dad is a high-end custom home general contractor, so I’ve had an example of a business owner raise me and knew I wanted to chase the same life, because the challenges of business ownership excite me more than the challenges of working a job I hate. In school and in the jobs that I’ve had, I was endlessly asking questions, trying to absorb as much wisdom as I could. I love solving problems for clients and am constantly trying to better equip myself to do more for them.

Qualifications

Training and qualifications

  • Education

    M-Tech

  • License

    General contractor

  • Experience

    Lifetime of industry exposure

While attending M-Tech’s Lehi campus, I loved walking by their statue out front. Every school day I read VENI, DIDICI, VICI, so when I graduated I wanted a photo, because I came, I learned, I conquered. When I started at M-Tech I had never welded before, but by the end I was helping instructors teach other students TIG welding.

My instructors would verify that I focused on the classwork and tried to know all the specifics very well, so while my hands caught up to my understanding, I kept asking endless questions and graduated with a foundational understanding that has carried me through everything I’ve worked on. It also showed me just how much there is to learn and filled me with excitement for the future!! I have so much to learn but am grateful for everything I already have.

Diverse Experience

What do I know how to do?

My work experience is quite broad, with several years in the high-end construction business where I picked up pieces of many trades as I fixed subcontractors’ work or worked alongside them. This includes framing, concrete, telehandler operating, to name a few. Within my metalworking career, I have done a steady mixture of custom projects, handrails, and structural steel. I’ve fit, welded, and installed structural steel, spent extensive time installing handrail, and built and installed various one-off projects, such as ladders, gates, window frames, etc. Below are some of the projects I’ve participated in.

Career

Projects I’ve worked on

The projects below are projects I worked on while employed at other companies. These are projects I’ve worked on as a welder, fabricator, or installer — and they show the kind of work I’ve experienced and know how to do.

  • Open staircase with floating treads and black horizontal-bar steel railing, with cable railing on the landing above

    Railing install

    Cable railing

I have participated in many cable railing installs of different kinds.

  • Crew on scaffolding guiding a steel pergola beam hanging from a crane onto its post

    Structural steel

    Professional welds in any environment

As a team we craned in and installed the structural components of this pergola, and I was tasked with making the welds in a tricky environment.

  • Steel columns and beams over B-deck and rebar, with wood framing going up around it

    Structural steel

    B-Deck install

I have participated in many complicated and simple B-Deck installs.

  • Single-spine steel stair with plate treads in a light well, a telehandler boom above

    Stair install

    Mono-stringer steel stair

A single-spine stair with plate treads, set in place with a telehandler.

  • Finished open-riser staircase with black steel pickets between two stone walls

    Railing install

    Stair case final result

Lots of people worked on this staircase. I participated in the installation of the stair stringers and handrails. Pretty amazing to see what can be built when trades combine.

  • Black steel access ladder mounted to a tiled exterior wall

    Install

    Wall-mounted steel ladder

A simple, sturdy ladder that was installed onto beautiful tile. I showcase it to show that I have experience mounting projects to various materials.

  • Black horizontal-bar handrail section on a staircase and upper landing while the house is being finished

    Railing install

    Handrail section

This is one of many handrail installs I participated in.

  • Heavy steel plate hopper on a flatbed trailer in a yard with mountains behind

    Weld repair

    Steel hopper repair

I helped out with another shop that needed another welder for a few days to help repair several hoppers like the one pictured.

  • Flanged pipe elbow set up on pipe stands and checked with levels in a welding shop

    Pipe fitting

    Pipe elbow fit-up

While in trade school I took an extensive course on pipe fitting and learned to fabricate joints like the structural support fit-up shown here.
